Historic village in the heart of Thuringia, Germany

Village with medieval circular layout in central Thuringia, on the fringe of the protected landscape of the “Middle Ilm Valley” with its many cycling and hiking routes.

Tiefengruben has been a conservation area since 1979 and in 2001 it was a Gold Medal winner in the nationwide “most beautiful village” competition. It lies 4 km to the west of Bad Berka, in the direction of Hohenfelden.

It has well maintained trekking paths, an informative “Orchard Trail” with many seldom seen fruit species and a beautiful baroque church with regular exhibitions. There are two major festivals each year, in May and October, which are well-known in the region and draw many visitors on those occasions. The main industries are fruit growing and agriculture.

Among its many local attractions are:

Erfurt, Weimar, Jena (all nearby historic and cultural tourist centres).

Hohenfelden (open air museum, local recreational lake, ‘Avenida’ pleasure baths).

Thuringian Forest (for hiking and winter sports, within easy reach by train or car).

The State of Thuringia maintains links with the County of Essex.

Many other excursions possible, such as: Jena/Auerstedt/Cospeda (Napoleonic battle fields & museum), Lyonel Feininger Tourist Route, Eisenach (J S Bach and Martin Luther), Mühlhausen (medieval city - Thomas Münzer, leader in the Peasants’ Revolt), Arnstadt (oldest recorded city in Thuringia - Bach Church and museum), Meiningen (famous theatre town), Bad Sulza (spa town - natural saline baths with “Liquid Sound”), Naumburg (medieval cathedral city), Gotha und Rudolstadt (royal residences), Colditz Castle famous POW camp 2hrs away.
